Vincent Fournier, 1970, France, is an image-maker who combines documentary and staged photography. He studied photography at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles. His ongoing series entitled Space Project reflects his fascination for the space age. His inspiration stems from various things in his youth and by watching movies as 2001: A Space Odessey and Solaris. His large scale images contain an aspect of humor, mainly due to carefully placing his subjects and objects. For this project, as well as his other personal works, he has traveled around the globe. Tour Operator is a body of work inspired by the book Around the world in 80 days by Jules Vernes. He has documented the transformation of landscapes and the interaction between mankind and the environment. In an intelligent and witty manner he directs our eyes to the bizarre and the usual. In his project The Man Machine he carefully staged robots in urban settings and the spaces where they are being developed. Tereza Vlčková, 1983, Czech Republic, is a conceptual and fine-art photographer currently studying at the Silesian University in Opava, the Institute of Creative Photography. In 2007 she completed the series A Perfect Day, Elise... showing floating girls with a mountainous background. Since then she has been in numerous exhibitions amongst which are Paris Photo in 2010 and 2011 and the traveling reGeneration2 group show. Throughout her series we find deeper layers dealing with themes as fear, the self and dreams. In her series Two she photographed indentical twins in a scary forest setting. The project deals with the questions of the "I" and the psychology of how we perceive ourselves. She seeks a fine line between fiction and reality. Claire Martin, 1980, Australia, is a documentary photographer with a focus on marginalised communities. In 2007 and 2008 she concentrated on Vancouver's Downtown East Side. Even though Vancouver is a city that was twice voted "the worlds most liveable", the residents of this part live below the poverty line. The suburb has an estimated AIDS rate of 30% and the leading cause of death is overdose. In 2009 she visited Slab City where she focused on the permanent residents of this community in the Colorado desert. It "is a place for the broken and desperate and for the fierce defenders of freedom from tyranny." In 2010 and 2011 she went to Haiti to document the aftermath of the earthquake. "Every spare piece of land has turned into a tent city and whole suburbs and major infrastructure lay demolished, essentially turning and entire city into a slum." Claire has exhibited her work in solo shows in Australia and has been in various group exhibitions around the world. In 2010 she won the Magnum Foundation Inge Morath award for female photographers under the age of 30. She is a member of the prestigious Australian photo collective Oculi. Colin Delfosse, 1981, Belgium, is a documentary photographer who studied Journalism. Together with three other photographers he founded the Out of Focus collective in 2005. As a collective (5 photographers) they focus on social issues. One of his latest projects focuses on Kazakhstan where he concentrates on the Soviet legacy in the country, still visually present. In 2010 he portrayed a large number of Congolese wrestlers and the culture around it. This series won the PDN photo annual award in 2011. Colin has traveled extensively for his strong and intimate projects. He has been to countries as China, Mali and Iraqi Kurdistan where he documented the movement of the Free Women of Kurdistan movement. Colin's work has been featured in The New York Times, Le Monde and The International Herald Tribune to name a few. Chen Man, 1980, China, is a commercial photographer who focuses on fashion, beauty and style. In 2005 she received a B.A. in photography and media studio at the central Academy of Fine Arts. It was before she graduated that she had already begun to shoot the covers for the new magazine Vision. The covers she created between 2003 and 2007 were unique within the history of Chinese covers. Pierre Crocquet, 1971, South Africa, started a career in the merchant-banking sector only to find out that his choice of career was flawed. Therefore he studied photography at the London College of Printing. He returned to South Africa and embarked on a photographic career. Since 2002 he released five books of which the latest is entitled Pinky Promise. It is an exploration into the terrain of child sexual abuse. During a period of three years Pierre combined seven stories of abuse, survival and healing in the monograph. The book breaks newground by including the stories of not only the victims, but also the perpetrators of child sexual abuse. In 2008 he released Enter Exit, a book showing the inhabitants of an isolated, small, multi-racial community. "The isolated community became a portal through which to explore facets of the human psyche." It is a very strong collection of black and white portraits. Corey Arnold, 1976, USA, is an Alaskan commercial fisherman as well as a documentary photographer. He received a BFA in photography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. In 2011 he released the book Fish-Work: The Bering Sea which includes images that were made between 2003 and 2010 while he was working as a deckhand on the Bering Sea crabber f/v Rollo. The series Fish-Work doesn't stop there, it is a life long project and has also taken him to various European countries capturing the lifestyle of fishermen. One of his latest series is Wolf Tide which includes a mixture of experiences as a fisherman, rural encounters with unsuspecting wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Nowadays he captains a wild salmon gillnetting operation in Bristol Bay while working on photo assignments and gallery exhibitions in the off season. His work has appeared in numerous magazines as The New Yorker, Esquire and Juxtapoz. In 2009 he was named one of the PDN's top 30 emerging photographers. This is not a written piece that issupposed to make you sad or feel pity; it is a calling to you and myself. It isnot a manifesto or a preach. It is what it is.

Yesterday I entered the living room of my girlfriend’sparents. My girlfriend and I have been together for ten years. She had gonewith her parents and her brother to the hospital to hear what could be doneabout the recently found tumor in her mothers (62) pancreas. The result wasdevastating. It cannot be operated and there is no other cure possible. Shehopes to live to see their 40th anniversary of marriage, her next birthday and that of her husband in January. Ientered the room where the family was sitting at the dining table. They wereall defeated. With tears in their eyes they greeted me one by one by receivingand giving a big hug. I had heard the news earlier in the afternoon by phone,but entering this room became a reality check. The mother would like to fightbut that is impossible. Even though the news has not sunk in, she has alreadydecided to make each day count. She also looked back at her life and was happywith the way she has lived it.

The described happening got thoughtsrunning through my head and often they were intertwined with photography, myown life and people in general. Not all of these thoughts were completely sanebut did lead to answers further down the road. Thoughts about how we spend our time.Recently I had read a post by photographer Jeremy Cowart on how he wished he had invested less time into e-mailing and his words stuck with me. It’s notonly e-mail, it’s also facebook, twitter, the internet in general, TV and otherprocrastinating activities. Being completely honest, I am sometimes too good atprocrastination and it can sometimes lead to a void. Of course I thought about500 Photographers within this context, and to be 100% honest the thoughtcrossed my mind that it is an irrelevant piece of internet in which I haveinvested thousands of hours of my life, sitting on a chair, staring at ascreen. Luckily I can say that this is not true. The “archive” I’m building hasvalue to me. I started it for myself in order to learn. A side-effect of thisproject is you, a large amount of visitors that come here for inspiration; thatis something of value too and gives this project something extra. I’m proud ofthat.

What I’m trying to get at is that I trulybelieve that you should not be spending too much time on this website. The samecounts for twitter, facebook and all the other activities that might give usinstant gratification, yet does not give you much in return in the long run. Godo that which will give you fulfillment. I know that 90% of the visitors ofthis website are active in the creative field. When you finish reading thismessage, turn of your computer and go produce, plan a shoot, pick up a pen andwrite down ideas. Whatever gets you moving forward into creating something.While you do this, promise me one thing: make itsomething of value to yourself. Forget about what your clients might like, whatyour parents, neighbors or anyone else would like to see you do. Do what youneed to do and make it count.

I’m going to finish 500 Photographers and Iwill probably continue in some way once the list is complete. However, I’mgoing to do my utmost best to create a photographic oeuvre of which I’m proud. Let’s allmake the short time we have on this planet count, first and foremost forourselves. Go live and enjoy it, I know I will!

Peter Hapak, 1973, Hungary, is a versatile photographer based in the US. He works for commercial and editorial clients, but his main focus lies on portraiture and the human body. For Time Magazine he has created impressive series, of which the latest is called The Protester. Time had named the Protester as person of the year 2011 and commisioned Hapak to travel to seven different countries to portray the protesters. In countries as Egypt, Spain, Greece and Tunesia he set up a makeshift studio in hotel rooms, anarchist headquarters and even in a temple in India. Peter also asked the portrayed to bring mementos of protest. Amongst the objects brought were Iphones, rubber pellets and Maalox, a substance used to counter the effects of tear gas. Another story he focused on were the Chilean miners that were trapped in 2010 which resulted in a strong series of black and white portraits. Peter has photographed a vast amount of celebrities as Robin Williams, Bono and Colin Firth. In her photography Magdalena invites you to enter her world of which she is not only an secret observer, but an active player herself. She often appears in her own images. It's a snapshot representation of the American way of life, full of parties, tattoo's, beards, rock bands, alcohol and nudity, often set within the American landscape and bright sunlight. Darcy Padilla, 1965, USA, is a photojournalist and documentary photographer. Her career as a freelance photographer started after completing 12 internships at daily newspapers as The New York Times and The Washington Post. Since then she covered stories in Cuba and Haiti, on Aids in Prison and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, just to name a few. Her most acclaimed body of work is The Julie Project. This long-term project is the story of a woman called Julie Baird. Eighteen years Darcy followed and photographed the story of AIDS, drug abuse, abusive relationships, poverty and death. Julie died on September 27th, 2010 at the age of 36, after having lived a turbulant life in which she gave birth to six children of whom the first five were taken away from her. It is an impressive, heartbreaking project with a dramatic, yet expected ending. The series rightfully received the W. Eugene Smith Award for Humanistic Photography in 2010. Amongst other awards for her work is the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for the work she did photographing residents of transient hotels in one of the poorest neighborhoods in San Francisco. Raúl Eduardo Stolkiner, better known as RES, 1957, Argentina, is a conceptual and fine-art photographer based in Buenos Aires. Chen Jiagang, 1962, China, studied architecture in Chongqing and became a full-time photographer in 2001. His large-scale images, some up to 4 meters wide, are a mix of documentary, conceptual and staged photography. For his series Third Front he visited a large number of abandoned villages and factories. In 1964, due to an unstable foreign policy, China installed heavy industry and factories in the heartland of its country, resulting in the relocation of millions of workers. The third front was born and the region was booming. However, in the early 1980's an economic reform was initiated, the factories were closed and the towns and cities became empty. Chen visited the region on many occasions and photographed the industrial wasteland. Within his images he puts a beautiful woman, often dressed in a Qipao, and sometimes a young girl. They are symbolic and create a reference to China's history as well as raising questions about it. Chen released several monographs and his work has been exhibited extensively throughout the world. Thomas works in a very exploratory manner, investigating the city he lives in from various different perspectives. His conceptual series are the work of an organized photographer who looks at the city as an outsider. His series Ochava Solstice is a collection of large format photographs showing the corners of numerous buildings. In the early 20th century the government mandated that buildings on corners in Buenos Aires have diagonal edges to improve visibility for cars. However, from the 1960's onwards, the economic imperatives of real estate development demanded maximum square footage. The ground floors are diagonal edge, the floors above have square edges. In 2010 he released the book Country Girls, an intimate portrait of gay life in the countryside of South-Africa. The areas in which he photographed are rough and poor, yet Sabelo shows that glamour is also present. He worked on this project for six years, focusing on drag queens, hairstylists and beauty pageant contestants who are still often perceived as un-African or un-Christian. Stephen Gill, 1971, UK, is an experimental, conceptual and documentary photographer. In 2005 he founded his publishing company in order to gain maximum control over the publication process of his books. He has released an impressive amount of books. For him a book is not merely a vessel or a shell in which to house and show his photographs, it should be the finished expression of the images. Various techniques are used as cut printing, spray paint or rubber stamps are used to what he considers "the key final stage in the production of his photographic works." The images for the series Outside In were made in Brighton where he featured objects found in the local surroundings that he literally put inside of his camera and started making images of street sceneries. To finish the images he used a magnifying glass to concentrate the sunlight onto some of the negatives in order to create markings. Other negatives were dipped into the sea hoping that the finished series would become something like the regurgitated contents of a giant vacuum cleaner. For his series Billboards he photographed the backsides of these large objects taking us to strange places that are normally hidden from our point of view. The people that wish not to have an independent state are largely leaving the region. His most recent monograph is Comfort Women, a series of portraits of Indonesian women who were victims of forced sexual labor during the second World War. During the war the Japanese military set up a system for sex slavery, forcing women into prostitution in military brothels. Most of the women suffered physical and emotional consequences ever since. In 2008 he introduced the book Bureaucratics, showing offices of members of the executive in various services and levels. The offices have been photographed in eight different countries on five different continents. The project was done with a writer; Will Tinnemans. As they would come by unannounced, Will would interview the employees, keeping them from tidying up the office. For the book Traces of War: Survivors of the Burma and Sumatra Railways he portrayed Dutch and Indonesian men who all worked as forced labor for the Japanese during World War II. They had to build the Burma or Sumatra railroads in miserable conditions leading to the death of many of them. Ken Kitano, 1968, Japan, is a conceptual photographer who uses long exposures and piles images on top of each other to create a new photograph. He has been working on the series Our Face since 1999. He shoots portraits of various social groups as young girls in Harajuku, office workers, farm village women in Bangladesh and supporters of the English national soccer team. Each time he shoots various dozens of evenly taken portraits which he piles on top of each other. The more faces that are printed, the more the contours of an individual become blurred and the expressions and ages become more ambigious in the final portrait. Richard Learoyd, 1966, UK, graduated in Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art. He has a very unique way of working which creates absolutely unique photographs. He build a giant camera that can best be described as a huge camera obscura. The camera is comprised of two rooms. In one room is the model or the object in a light source. In the other room, behind a large lens, is a huge piece of photographic paper. Once exposed, a unique, life-size direct-positive print is created. Unlike the pinhole camera images, Richard's photographs are clear of distortion, sharp and very detailed. Apart from the technical aspects, he manages to create poetically stunning imagery. He places people, clothed and nude, as well as objects in front of his lens. The exposure takes 8 hours, so the models have to sit still while being under hot lights for the same amount of time. The final and approved images, he destroys the one's that are imperfect, have a painter-like quality to them with soft tones and melancholic poses. He considers the method to be a natural step in search of the ultimate image.

Chris McCaw, 1971, USA, received a BFA in photography at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He works on his photography using a large-format camera and the platinum/palladium process. His current project is called Sunburn. He was making all-night exposures of the stars while on a camping trip in 2003. He woke up late and therefore the shutter was not closed in time. What he found out by mistake was the start of a new project. The rising sun was so focused and powerful that it physically changed the film. The sun burns its path onto the negative creating an effect called solarization, a natural reversal of tonality due to over-exposure. The negative literally has a burnt hole in it with the surrounding landscape in complete reversal. He then started experimenting and perfecting his technique using the sun as an active participant in his images. In 2006 he chose to use vintage fiber based gelatin b&w paper. The gelatin in the paper gets cooked and leaves orange and red colors. In this way he created one of a kind paper negatives. His series The Family Farm and Travelogue were shot using a 7x17" view camera. In this way he was capable to create 7x17" direct contact prints by hand. Cédric Gerbehaye, 1977, Belgium, was trained as a journalist who chose photography as his medium to tell his stories. In 2002 he started to follow the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a long-term project. He created several bodies of work in the conflict area about Hebron, Gaza and on the economic crisis in Israel, showing that a large number of Israelis today live below the poverty line due to war and the fact that the occupation of Palestinian territories costs a lot of money to the Israeli government who are therefore spending much less on social programs. Since 2007 he has been focused on the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is where he created the images for his book Congo in Limbo, telling the story of the armed conflict that killed nearly four million people. In the eastern regions of Congo, filled with mineral resources, the situation is still very tense. One of his latest series is Land of Cush. He went to the Nuba Mounts, to the north of the demarcation line that now separates the South Sudan state and Sudan. The inhabitants, who used to fight with the southern separatists soldiers for 20 years, are now victims of aerial bombardments from the Khartoum regime as retaliation. Once he was finished with his studies at the School for Photography in The Hague he went to Düsseldorf, Germany to assist an advertising photographer. Zhang Xiao, 1981, China, studied Architecture at Yantai University. Between 2005 and 2009 he worked for the Chongqing Morning Post and has since been active as a freelance photographer. His project Coastline focuses, as the title describes, on the Chinese coastline which is 18000 kilometres long. For Xiao the sea is a place of strong emotions and rich imagery. He states that "the sea is the beginning of lives and dreams." The project also clearly shows how China is changing and has been changing in the last 30 years since it began opening up. This change is also visible in his project They. The project documents the Chinese culture while undergoing a societal change. For the past four years she has been working as an engaged freelance photographer in East Africa where she focuses on personal projects and collaborates with international NGOs. Several bodies of work were made in Burundi. The series Burundian Elections deals with the rise in tension surrounding the 2010 elections. The other stories in Burundi often deal with physical handicap. For The Backyard Women she followed several women who suffer from an obstetric fistula, a lesion responsible for a permanent and uncontrollable flow of urine or fecal matter, often due to a long and difficult childbirth. More than 80% of these women are thrown out by their husbands creating vast social problems and the resources to treat them are lacking. In Kirundi, fistula is called "the backyard disease". Liu Bolin, 1973, China, is a sculptor and conceptual photographer. He received a B.A. from Shandong University of Arts in Jinan and an M.F.A. in sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. When in 2005 the Chinese government ordered the demolition of the Beijing International Art Camp which housed Liu's studio he created an image as a response. He painted his body against the rubble of the demolished building. It was the first image of the extended body of work entitled Hiding in the City. Ana Casas Broda, 1965, Spain, has been living in Mexico since she was eight years old. Her long-term projects are intense and personal. Her latest body of work is Kinderwunsch, a complex and personal set of images dealing with maternity. She spent five years submitting herself to fertility treatments before she got her first son. When she entered the same process a second time she decided to capture the entire process, the treatments, the pregnancy, birth, bodily contact, affection, feeding and other aspects of the experience. As the project progressed, it has become more complex. With her sons she carries out actions that derive from the childrens minds or from her fantasies. In 2000 she released the book Album, a photographic project that is built on the relationship between her grandmother and herself. It includes images from her childhood to photographs of the last years of her grandmother. The book deals with themes as memory, cultural and personal inheritance as a way to explore identity. Throughout the years she has specialized and perfected her technique of photographing in water. The water, in which light travels slower thus creating a higher optical density, is used to produce dream-like illusions. It intensifies colors and blurs the subjects creating painter-like images. The color photographs are achieved without digital manipulation and remind us of Baroque paintings. The floating female bodies and clothing bend and distort due to this technique. She uses Chiaroscuro, a term that dates from the Renaissance period describing the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, to capture the female form in an abyss of boundless space. In her series Before Life she portrayed girls on the Cape Flats, an area full of problems as poverty, crime, teenage pregnancies, drug addiction and gangs. The girls are all dressed up for their Matric Dance, a South African tradition for graduating 12th grade. These girls are often the first matriculants of their family, having been disadvantaged by the apartheid era. In Life After she focused on the tattoos and lives of South-Africa's prison gangs after having been released into society. The men have often been imprisoned for many years, if not decades. The tattoo's, forbidden in the prison system, show life stories, hierarchy, testimonies and personal statements. Torsten Warmuth, 1968, is a German experimental, fine-art photographer who received a degree in Natural Science and a doctorate at the University of Kassel. In 1996, after having worked for a US mathematics software producer he decides to devote himself exclusively to photography. Within his extensive portfolio we find works using the double exposure technique. For most of his images he uses a large format camera. His series Belle de Nuit contains work surrounding Berlin's nightlife. While making this series he experimented with multiple toning, producing unique works that give the prints a heightened plastic effect which become Silver Paintings. From 2010 onwards, the produced negatives have become more of a raw material that he works on creating pictorial compositions. By hand he creates multi-toned prints on gelatin silver paper. Photography had been a serious hobby, but in 2005 he started showing his images and traveling the world. Since then he has been to countries as Tanzania, Tibet, Bangladesh and Turkey. Since 2008 he found a way to combine the photography with his work in eyecare. He worked together with Seva Canada, an organization whose mission is the elimination of preventable and treatable blindness around the world. In Thailand he focused on the most southern provinces creating a body of work called Derelict that deals with Thailand's muslim majority and the subject of abandonment. He completed several workshops given by Mary Ellen Mark, worked as one of her assistants for a short period and attended a three-semester fine art photography program at Broby Grafiska in Sweden. His project Breathe began as a protest against the current digital image consumption for which he uses a Kodak 8x10" view camera from 1904 with silver gelatin paper. The strong black and white portraits are made with exposure times that last from several seconds to one or two minutes. He received a BFA in Anthropology and Photography at the Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA in Photography from the University of New Mexico. For his series Dark Emanations he placed dead squid in containers where they emit gaseous clouds of phosphorescent light as they decay. This light or chemical decomposition imprints itself as colors on paper. The beauty for Christopher is not the death of the squid, but the possibility of new life due to the decaying process. In 2006 he spend 27 days in a tent in Iceland where he created a body of work consisting of four suites of images that are unique yet intertwined. He photographed the entire night on one single image, documented the cairns (man-made piles of stones) and the landscapes. While working on this project he would collect a small plant in the morning, place it on an impregnated paper attached to his backpack. While hiking it was exposed to the sun thus creating an image. One of the first trips which resulted in the series Faces and Places was from Brussels to Mongolia and home via Africa (80.000km) in an old Jeep. In 2008 she started the project called AMEN. She visiting countries as Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Benin, Malawi and Ghana amongst others. Antonio Bolfo, 1981, USA, is a photojournalist based in New York City. His career started working as an animator for video games before he decided to persue photography fulltime. For his series NYPD: Operation IMPACT he followed the youngest, most untested officers on their operation IMPACT. The police men and women are send to the most violent and dangerous neighbourhoods of NYC for a plunge into "The Job". The 30 rookies in the South Bronx are confronted with some of the most vicious criminals. Bolfo also visited Haiti on several occasions resulting in series on the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2010. In Haiti he also followed local fishermen who had to dig mass graves to bury the dead and he visited the mass garbage dumps in Port au Prince where a vast community tries to survive by searching food and scrap metal at the dumping site. Antonio was recently selected for the World Press Joop Swart masterclass.
